ABOUT THIS RESOURCE
Description
Movie Density DCTL 2.0 is a subtractive saturation and color-density tool for DaVinci Resolve Studio from Passion Fuels Ambition (PFA). It is designed to address the thin, overly digital appearance that can result from conventional saturation by creating deeper colors, richer shadows, and stronger separation throughout the image.
Instead of simply increasing chroma uniformly, Movie Density uses subtractive saturation to combine color intensity with changes in perceived density and luminance. The result is designed to produce richer, weightier color with a more film-inspired response.

SUBTRACTIVE SATURATION
Movie Density uses Subtractive Saturation as the foundation of its color processing.
Conventional saturation primarily increases chroma, which can make colors brighter and more intense without necessarily creating greater visual depth. Subtractive Saturation combines saturation changes with luminance behavior to produce colors that feel deeper and heavier.
This approach is particularly useful for:
• Developing deeper reds
• Creating richer blues
• Increasing perceived color weight
• Maintaining dimensional shadows
• Improving separation between hues
• Reducing an excessively bright or digital saturation response
FILM COLOR DENSITY
The primary purpose of Movie Density is to create the sense of color density commonly associated with film imagery.
As Density is increased, colors are designed to become richer and more dimensional rather than simply more saturated. This provides an alternative to relying entirely on conventional saturation controls.
6-CHANNEL CONTROL
Movie Density provides control across six major color groups:
• Red
• Green
• Blue
• Cyan
• Magenta
• Yellow
Separating the spectrum into these groups allows density processing to be targeted more precisely instead of applying identical behavior across every color.
MASK & RANGE TOOL
The integrated Mask & Range Tool provides control over the color ranges affected by Movie Density.
It can be used to:
• Visualize affected color regions
• Narrow the selected range
• Expand the affected hue range
• Reduce unwanted color spill
• Control how R, G, B, C, M, and Y channels are interpreted
DENSITY HUE SELECTION
Density Hue Selection provides additional control over the hue range used for density processing.
The density selection can be made narrower or sharper to adapt the tool to the palette of a particular scene.
Applications include:
• Concentrating density in warmer desert palettes
• Emphasizing cooler colors in night scenes
• Developing deeper reds
• Controlling environmental greens and blues
• Adapting density to the dominant palette of a project
COLOR SEPARATION
Subtractive Saturation combined with hue-range control helps create greater perceived separation between colors.
Instead of pushing every color with identical saturation behavior, Movie Density can be refined so selected hues become deeper and more prominent while maintaining their relationship with surrounding colors.
FLEXIBLE COLOR HIGHLIGHTING
After the overall density foundation has been established, the color controls can be used to selectively emphasize important hues.
This allows a broad palette to be established first before individual color accents are refined.
WORKING WITH COLOR SLIDER
PFA designed Movie Density to work alongside Color Slider DCTL.
Movie Density can establish the overall color depth and density, while Color Slider can provide more targeted refinement of individual color groups.
PFA demonstrates the following reference node structure:
1. Color Space Transform In
2. Color Slider DCTL
3. Movie Density DCTL
4. SkinMatch DCTL
5. Color Space Transform Out
6. FilmFade DCTL
This is a reference workflow rather than a mandatory node structure and can be adapted to the project's color-management pipeline.
COLOR PROCESSING
According to PFA's technical specifications, Movie Density supports:
• Rec.709
• P3
• Rec.2020
• ACES
• Camera Log workflows
• HDR10
• Dolby Vision
• 32-bit floating-point processing
• High-resolution workflows, including 8K+
The DCTL performs algorithmic color transformations rather than relying on a fixed LUT grid, keeping its parameters adjustable throughout the grading process.
